Sunrise/Grace Uganda Welcomes Julie, a Student of the Influence of Culture on Childbirth

Meet Julie Morel and New Friend Sandra (Clinic Pharmacy Technician)

Grace Medical/Maternity recently hosted Julie Fleur Morel, a Vassar College grad and student of cultural practices during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. Pharmacy tech Sandra, Clinical officer Geofrey, Midwives Harriet and Anat, and traditional birth attendants generously shared information on the unique blend of traditional cultural practices, including use of herbs alongside the midwifery model of care. This person-centered model which saves countless lives around the world is based on a strong belief that women can give birth naturally without intervention most of the time. Julie made the most of precious opportunities to meet with traditional birth attendants, accompany Grace staff on two village outreach gatherings, and observe the calm, kind, and welcoming style of the two Ugandan midwives. Among other impressions, Julie noted the receptivity of villagers to family planning, expertly taught by the clinic outreach team. She also noted the warm rapport created by the staff.
